I had a follower reach out to me about a question I have never been asked before. Are essential oils and supplements safe in children with Down’s Syndrome where there is an over expression of SOD-1. Um. . . .??‍♀️
.
The SOD or superoxide dismutase enzyme is located on chromosome 21. Since people with Down’s syndrome have 3 copies of chromosome 21, there is approximately 50% more enzyme activity. This overactivity may be responsible for the neurological symptoms of the disease. SOD may also explain why older women are more likely to have children with Down’s syndrome. Gene expression of SOD on chromosome 21 increases in eggs as we age as this to prolongs the life of the egg. Therefore older women are more likely to pass on this over expression of SOD.
.
While I could find no human studies to answer the question, there is some evidence to go on. First, we do know that some essential oils and supplements increase the activity of SOD. Wolfberry has been shown to increase activity more than 200%. Oregano, star anise, and thyme essential oils as well as coconut oil, red wine, turmeric have all been shown to increase the expression of SOD genes. In theory, yes, using these supplement ingredients or essential oils may worsen the cognitive symptoms of Down’s syndrome.
.
It is kind of weird to say, but by this rationale, Down’s syndrome patients may actually respond to an unhealthy diet and living environment that depletes superoxide dismutase. Likely wouldn’t be my choice as a parent, but it makes sense in theory.
