It is impossible to look flawless all the time. And besides, who even wants to?
.
Women are held at such a high standard. And worse, to large extent, we are all held to the same beauty standard. Listening to the @supersoul memorial of #tonimorrison and her @nobelprize_org winning work #thebluesteye reminded me harmful it is when we compare ourselves to one another, compare ourselves to painting and photographs, and when we place our self worth on the validations of others who assure us that we are indeed beautiful.
.
True beauty however comes not from perceptions of others, but of the perception of self. Think of a small child, dressing up in mamas clothing, a ballet costume, or playing cook or scientist. There is no doubt in her mind that she is important, smart, creative, engaged, and yes, even pretty. The best part of a small child is that pretty doesn’t really even matter. Fun, laughter, and play matter so much more. It isn’t until someone else comes along and burst the bubble of perfection that we know that we are any different, any less appealing, any less capable.
.
I am here to tell you, we all still have the power of that tiny child. We can all still sit back and go “Damn, I am a genius at what I do, and no one can do it like I can.” We can choose to wake up feeling flawlessly flawed and perfectly imperfect. Even with no makeup, heavier than we want to be, and with dark circles from the night before. We are, each and every one, already in possession of true beauty.
.
Don’t believe it? Then girl, grab an outfit that makes you feel like a million bucks, deck yourself in crystals, drench yourself on some oils, and carry some more with you.
.
If you don’t live your life, who will?
.
Tell me honestly, when was the last time you felt truly beautiful from within? When is the last time you told a young girl that she is skilled, capable, quick-witted, intuitive, honest, kind, persistent, determined, or literally anything other than pretty.
.
When was the last time you praised yourself?
.
More to see in story.
